竹林の禅庭 "In union, there is strength”

We are thrilled to showcase an installation that we recently completed for Grand Seiko, featuring the exquisite Japanese landscape art titled "竹林の禅庭 in Union, There is Strength." This remarkable piece was designed by talented art director, Christopher Lai Dehua, and required a total of 336 man-hours to bring to life.

A Rhythmic

Interactive Atmosphere

One of the key features of this installation is the gravel path that runs through it, creating a unique and interactive atmosphere. The gravel patterns, meticulously drawn by our Art Director, Christopher Lai (formerly a Visual Merchandiser of Shiseido Group Travel Retail), represent water and also evoke the concept of distance and emptiness found in traditional Japanese paintings.

Focusing on key Elements and Design Principles

This design is centered around three key elements: rocks, trees, and a stone lantern. Each of these elements has been carefully chosen and placed to adhere to the five design principles of Japanese gardens:

  1. Asymmetry: The arrangement of elements in the installation is intentionally asymmetrical, creating a sense of natural beauty and harmony.

  2. Enclosure: The installation is enclosed by carefully positioned plants and structures, providing a sense of privacy and tranquility.

  3. Borrowed Scenery: The surrounding environment is incorporated into the design, allowing the natural landscape to become an integral part of the installation.

  4. Balance: The placement of rocks, trees, and the stone lantern is meticulously balanced, creating a visually pleasing composition.

  5. Symbolism: Each element in the installation carries symbolic meaning, representing concepts such as strength, unity, and the passage of time.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Gusto Collective SEA and Grand Seiko APAC for entrusting us with this project. It has been an honor to bring this captivating installation to life, and we hope it brings joy and inspiration to all who experience it.
